HelloAI glossary

General-purpose AI

Explain it for

An AI model trained on broad data that can handle many different tasks, like ChatGPT or other large language models. Regulators including the EU AI Act use this term (GPAI) for foundation models. General-purpose AI is broad in capability, but it is still not broad AI or AGI: it does not truly understand or transfer skill across any domain the way a person does. It sits on the narrow side of the narrow-vs-broad split.

In the clinic

A hospital licenses a general-purpose model for staff, and the cardiology team wants to use it to turn echo reports into short summaries for referring physicians. The vendor's evaluation shows strong scores on broad benchmarks and medical exam questions, none of which involved echo reports. Before any summary goes out, the team runs its own check on a sample of real reports, with a cardiologist comparing each summary line by line against the source and writing down every type of error found.
