HelloAI glossary

Machine learning

A way of building software where, instead of writing rules by hand, you show the system many examples and let it find the patterns itself. Most modern clinical AI is machine learning.

In the clinic

An outpatient department trains a machine learning model on two years of scheduling records to predict missed appointments, and it finds patterns nobody wrote as rules, such as travel distance and how often a visit was rescheduled. It scores well on held-out records from those same two years. After the clinic adds video visits and evening slots, its predictions drift, because the behavior it learned came from a schedule that has since changed. Before its scores drive double-booking, decide who checks its accuracy each month and which changes to the clinic trigger a retrain.
