HelloAI glossary

Narrow AI

Every AI system built so far, past and present, from single-task tools to general-purpose models like ChatGPT. Even models that handle many tasks are still considered narrow by many researchers, because they are built for specific tasks rather than matching human general intelligence. Also called weak AI. The counterpart to broad AI.

In the clinic

A chest X-ray tool built to detect pneumothorax returns a negative result on a film that also shows a new mass in the left upper lobe. The tool did its one job correctly and has nothing to say about the mass, yet a worklist label reading "AI negative" invites a busy reader to treat the whole film as cleared. Label each output with the finding it covers, such as "no pneumothorax detected", and keep every film on the full reading path.
