Natural language processing

The branch of AI that works with human language: reading clinical notes, transcribing speech, pulling structured meaning out of free text.

In the clinic

A quality team uses an NLP tool to scan radiology reports for incidental lung nodules, so each one gets a tracked follow-up. Phrases like no suspicious nodule, possible nodule versus vessel, and previously described nodule now resolved are where such tools slip, either flagging patients who need nothing or missing those who do. Before relying on it, pull a few hundred of your own reports, have a clinician mark the true cases, and compare that list with what the tool found.
