Neural network
The layered mathematical structure deep learning uses to find patterns. Loosely inspired by how neurons connect, though it does not actually work like a brain.
A product brochure says its neural network reads chest X-rays the way a radiologist does. Underneath, it turns pixels into a score through millions of weights tuned on its training images, and it will use any pattern that predicted the label, including ones a radiologist would ignore, such as the look of a portable film, which tends to come from sicker inpatients. Ask how the vendor checked that the score follows the lung findings, for example by reporting performance separately for portable and upright films, before you trust it on ICU images.
