PACS

Explain it for

Picture archiving and communication system: the digital storage hospitals use for medical images. Because radiology went digital early through PACS, it had the labeled image archives that made imaging AI possible first.

In the clinic

An imaging AI tool sends its findings back to PACS as an extra series of marked-up images, and the integration team archives them with every study. Months later a referring surgeon opens a CT in the clinical viewer and sees a red box on a nodule the radiologist had looked at and dismissed, with nothing on screen to say so. Before go-live, decide whether AI output is archived in PACS, who can see it outside radiology, and how a radiologist's disagreement is recorded next to it.
