Predictive AI

AI that scores, classifies, or flags from data it was trained on: a CAD tool, a risk score, a triage algorithm. You direct it by selection and configuration, picking the right tool and setting it correctly, rather than by typing an instruction. Distinct from generative AI, which produces new content from a prompt.

In the clinic

A hospital switches on a deterioration score that runs every hour on every adult inpatient. The levers the ward holds are which units it covers and the score that pages the rapid response nurse, and those two settings decide how many alerts arrive per shift and how many deteriorating patients get flagged early. Before go-live, run it silently for a few weeks, count the pages each candidate threshold would have produced and the later deteriorations it would have caught, and set the threshold with the nurses who will answer them.
