Search and planning algorithms

A kind of symbolic AI that follows fixed logic to explore possible paths toward a goal, without learning from past attempts. Amazon's warehouse robots use search algorithms to find the most efficient route between items.

In the clinic

An operating room scheduling tool searches through possible case orders to fit each day's lists into the available sessions, and its plans come out tighter than the ones coordinators used to build by hand. In the first week it puts a child with type 1 diabetes at the end of an afternoon list, because nobody entered the local rule that these patients go first to keep fasting short. Before go-live, ask the coordinators to write down every rule they apply from habit, check each one is in the tool's constraints, and give that list a named owner.
