AI that follows explicit rules coded in advance for every anticipated outcome, without learning. Also called rule-based AI. Splits into simple rule-based systems, expert systems, and search and planning algorithms. The counterpart to machine learning inside narrow AI.
A hospital's pharmacists built a set of dose-range rules years ago, one per drug, and each one still fires exactly as written when a prescription exceeds its limit. Three drugs added to the formulary since then never got rules, so an overdose of any of them passes without an alert, and prescribers have no way to tell a silent check from a missing one. Make rule review a step in every formulary change, give the rule set a named owner, and run a regular list of drugs that have no rule at all.
