Validated population
The patient group a tool was actually tested on. Performance inside that group is evidenced; performance outside it is unknown, not assumed. Checking whether the patient in front of you fits the validated population is part of using any AI tool well.
A wrist fracture detection tool in the emergency department was validated on adults, and on a busy evening it returns a result for a 12-year-old as readily as for a 40-year-old. Open growth plates look different on X-ray, and the tool has no evidence behind it for that child, whether its answer is reassuring or alarming. Ask the supplier whether outputs can be suppressed or labeled for patients outside the validated age range, and until then make sure the emergency team knows where that range ends.
